In the Shade painting is the first part out of two paintings, dedicated to the idea that happiness and good opportunities are all around us – we have to realize that. The main character here is the chimpanzee, who dreams of getting at least one banana for breakfast.
He has lost all hope for the dream treat, he believes he is just not destined to get what he wants because fate is exceptionally unfair to him and life is hard. He hasn’t realized yet that
the only obstacle is he himself,
holding an umbrella and right in the middle of the rain of bananas?!?
And still, complaining that life sucks?! Really?! And he needs so little to be happy. But we, as spectators of everything that happens, can clearly see how fate provides us with everything we need, if only we could throw away the bad thoughts, fears, and self-pity aside, look around and realize that life is actually full of possibilities.
